Season One
PIlot. When her favorite
volunteer at the community center, Chad (Jesse Bradford), graduates
from high school and heads for college, Serendipity Horton (Carol
Channing) makes a decision to follow her heart. Even though she
is the oldest matriculated student at the University of Manahattan,
she makes fast friends with a quirky R.A. (Samm Levine) and clashes
with her wild roommate (Amanda Foreman). But Chad seems less than
happy to see her. Each episode begins with an elaborate dance number,
sung to her former nurse, Sally (Voice of Kathy Griffin).
Admissions. Serendipity
(Broadway legend Carol Channing) gets a job in the admissions office,
giving her the opportunity to read Chad's entrance essay. But when
she finds out he thinks of her as a "third Grandma", she
seeks solace in the arms of a young artist (guest star Simon Rex).
Chad: Jesse Bradford.
Upwordsed. Chad and Serendipity
are brought closer together after they are mugged, but she is faced
with a choice when her Resident Adviser, Mordecai (Samm Levine)
makes his feelings for her known over a vocabulary game. Meanwhile,
Serendipity gets a new neighbor named Tertiary Black Character (Elise
Neal) who teaches her the art of Hip-Hop.
Rod McCarthy (Part One).
As her relationship with Mordecai (Samm Levine) continues to deepen,
Serendipity (Carol Channing) is frustrated when an old flame named
Rod (Rip Taylor) arrives in New York and lavishes her with presents.
And confetti. She attempts to get help from Chad (Jesse Bradford)
but he comes to see Rod's point of view. Tertiary Black Character
(Elise Neal) struggles with a Chemistry exam.
Rod McCarthy (Part Two).
As Rod (guest star Rip Taylor) recuperates from his shocking piano
accident, Serendipity (Carol Channing) struggles with what to tell
Mordecai (Samm Levine) about Rod's request for a kiss. Tertiary
Black Character (Elise Neal) may have a boyfriend and he may be
cheating on her. Josh (Jesse Bradford) decides to try out for the
fencing team.
The Broadway Melody of 2002.
In an episode marked by many flashbacks and musical interludes,
Serendipity (Carol Channing) auditions for a role in the college
musical. She remembers back to her days as a young ingenue (Channing
also plays her 18 year old self) and the decision that changed her
life.
My Heart Belongs to Daddy.
When Serendipity's 102-year-old father (Hal Holbrook) finds out
that she has switched her major from Pre-Med to Drama, she worries
that he will cut off her tuition payments. Mordecai (Samm Levine)
and Josh (Jesse Bradford) bond over a game of pick-up lacrosse.
Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal) ponders a sexual proposition
from her Organic Chemistry professor (Eric Roberts). Serendipity:
Carol Channing.
Top 40. Serendipty (Carol
Channing) gets an after school job at a record company called Throb.
While she and the receptionist (Jane Leeves) hit it off, she soon
messes up an important meeting, earning the ire of the boss (Johnathan
Prince). Meanwhile, Teritary Black Character (Elise Neal) and Mordecai
(Samm Levine) try to survive finals. And Chad (Jesse Bradford) begins
betting on dograces.
Love and the Proper GPA.
Serendipity (Carol Channing) ends her first semester at the University
of Manhattan worrying about her grades and in a quandary about her
love life. Mordecai (Samm Levine) makes a last ditch effort to win
her heart just as Chad (Jesse Bradford) begins to warm to her octogenarian
wiles. Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal) is also there.
Miracle In the Dining Hall.
Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal) has lost the Christmas spirit
so it's up to the gang to teach her the joys of the holidays while
snowed in at school. Serendipity (Carol Channing) teams up with
the Cafeteria Supervisor (Special guest star Aretha Franklin) to
perform a medley of holiday classics. Chad and Mordecai (Jesse Bradford
and Samm Levine) put the differences aside to bring Christmas gifts
to orphans.
Music and Memories. As
Serendipity (Carol Channing) flashes back to her first semester
at the University of Manhattan, she sings a series of showtunes
to illuminate each incident. Songs include: "Wash That Man
Right Out of My Hair", "On My Own" and "Gethsemane".
The S Word. As Winter
Quarter begins, Serendipity (Carol Channing) and Mordecai (Samm
Levine) discuss taking their relationship to the next level, requiring
a visit to the student health center and an awkward conversation
with a baffled nurse (Brenda Strong). Tertiary Black Character (Elise
Neal) competes for a single room in the dorm. And Chad (Jesse Bradford)
loses his tuition money at the dog track.
Alone Time. Serendipity
(Carol Channing) and Mordecai (Samm Levine) spend a weekend in the
Hamptons with the intent of consumating their relationship. But
things go awry when an increasing frazzled Chad (Jesse Bradford)
shows up with Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal) and returning
guest star Rip Taylor in tow.
Guess Who's Coming to the Dining
Hall. A nervous Serendipity (Carol Channing) prepares to
meet Mordecai's (Samm Levine) parents (Guest stars Richard Lewis
and Fran Drescher) while her boyfriend worries how she will react
to them. Chad (Jesse Bradford) needs the help of Tertiary Black
Character (Elise Neal) in order to pass his Chemistry mid-term,
but her focus is on the new Dorm Director (Taye Diggs).
Get Here. American
Idol's Justin Guarini guest stars as Serendipity's (Carol Channing)
great nephew who comes to New York seeking fame, but ends up falling
for Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal). Mordecai and Chad (Samm
Levine and Jesse Bredford) decide to try being roommates, but their
feelings for Serendipity lead to tension. In the end, Guarin and
Serendipity team up for a rousing rendition of "Ain't No Mountain
High Enough" that threatens to literally bring down the house.
And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going.
Mordecai (Samm Levine) and Serendipity's (Carol Channing) newfound
bliss is interrupted by the return of his high school girlfriend
Shanna (Summer Glau) who still has feeling for him. Will Chad (Jesse
Bradford) take the opportunity to confess he deepening feelings
for Serendipity? Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal) welcomes
her plus-size sister (Frenchie Davis) to campus. But she and Serendipity
have a sing off caused by the cast album of Dreamgirls, no glass
in the building is safe.
Party Girls. Having broken
up with Mordecai (Samm Levine), Serendipity (Carol Channing) enjoys
life as a single girl, accompanying Tertiary Black Character (Elise
Neal) and her friends for a night on the town. But when she wakes
up in the bed of a frat boy (Shane West), she turns the Walk of
Shame into a rousing production number featuring the songs of Rodgers
and Hammerstein. Meanwhile, Mordecai (Samm Levine) struggles with
his feelins for Serendipity and Shanna (Summer Glau).
Confessions. Trying to
keep her drunken exploits a secret, Serendipity agrees to set Steve
(Shane West) up on a date with Tertiary Black Character (Elise Neal).
But when the two hit it off, she struggles with whether or not to
tell her friend the truth. After breaking up with Shanna, Mordecai
(Samm Levine) decides to try to win Serendipity back just as Chad
(Jesse Bradford) finally gains the courage to tell her he loves
her as well.
A Song In Her Heart.
After hearing Chad (Jesse Bradford) and Mordecai (Samm Levine) profess
their love to her, Serendipity (Carol Channing) makes an agonizing
choice. In a special, all-musical episode the cast remembers the
year that's past and looks toward the future. And Serendipity makes
the most important choice of her life. Standout numbers include
Tertiary Black Character's (Elise Neal) tender rendition of "Mister
Cellophane" and an appearance by the Broadway Cast of The
Lion King as Chad remembers his addiction to dog-track betting
in song.
Season Two
Texas Two Step. Serendipity’s
(Carol Channing) choice is finally revealed as the sophomore college
soap begins its season. After taking Josh (Jesse Bradford) on his
offer of a road trip, Serendipity’s inflamed rheumatism causes
her to take a cruise in the tropics. When she returns to the University
of Manhattan, she’s fitter, tanner and she’s brought
a friend. Wilford Brimley joins the cast for a six episode stint
as Buck Buchanan, a Texas oil baron who throws a wrench in the plans
of both Josh and Mordecai (Samm Levine).
